Two images that have been attached to two seperate posts have came up black until they are clicked on, they were both .png and both added by an Apple device. Any idea's ?

Hi Ally,

this seems to be a problem with the GDLib on your Server:
When uploading Images / Attachments your forum will automatically scale down the thumbnail using GDLib on your Server.

If this happens there must be a problem with that.

If it happens with every image Upload and you have a PHP-CGI Configuration try to delete the .htaccess from the folder
upload/attachments/ - some configurations with external GDLib Processors don't allow locked folders. But please only do that if it happens with EVERY upload and not just sometimes. If other uploads work this is not the problem and the .htaccess wich gives you additional security can stay where it is.

Other problems could be (and are mostly the case) that you have to contact your Server Admin to enlarge the limits. Or you could reduce the max upload size per file in your ACP for CF4 Attachments to prevent users from uploading very large images to your forum wich have for example more than 1MB or so.

In these scenarios an uploaded image was so huge that your server didn't finish the Scaling process because the memory limit of your GDLib / PHP Environment was reached to execute the scaling completely. Especially PNG Files can be very large so chances are good that this was the problem here: Too large image size to handle scaling via GDLib. If you have a PHP-CGI configuration where GDLib works in its own microcosm it can be that the PHP Limits are still within their borders (so the forum does not show an error message) but the scaling in the external GDLib fails and only produces a black image like you have it. If you click on the picture the full size version will be loaded so this shows that the forum does upload the images but the scaling process was the failure in this case.

Sometimes it can also be that the uploaded images were just corrupt. So this means the image itself can still be displayed by the browser and the error correction there but if you try to scale down the image with the more sensitive GDLib it could fail and stay black.

So basically no problem with your forum directly.

Sincerely,
Chris
