500 error CF3

Hi,

We have still CF3 running. But we are getting problems lately.
For example, random 500 messages without logging (PHP and HTTPD). After a page refresh it is working fine.

How do we fix this kind of things?

Hi itzmie,

random errors - especially 500 Errors - are errors caused by your server and rarely by the software behind it.

So I think you should contact your host about that, this looks like problems with your server, especially because these are random errors and sometimes look like you have corrupt files. Especially the "Error dispatching request to" messages are clearly messages from your server software, not from the CF3. Looks like your PHPCGI or Apache runs into timeouts or is getting unresponsive when trying to handle the page request.

I think it could be overload of your server wich makes the interpreter quit before the script is executed.
But this doesn't look like a CF3 problem to me. More like a load balancing problem (wich explains why it works when you reload with the same software/script and page behind it). If it is a problem with the Software itself you should get the same error over and over again.

Sincerely,
Chris

No, I've got my own VPS but I fixed the problem.

I increased the number of caches and memory from PHP. It looks like it's working fine now! :-)

One thing is still weird. Somehow some of the attached pictures are upsidedown.

Glad you fixed it. Yeah I know from your other threads that you have a very huge board, so this confirms my theory with the load problems. :)

The Attached Images are rescaled via GDLib on your Server, so if these images are flipped (wich is weird) there seems to be a problem with your GDLib configuration.
The CF3 just uses the standard resize commands there, no rotation at all, GDLib does the rest.

I'd also suggest that you - if possible - switch from the PHP-CGI configuration to PHP as Module. This would increase the performance (especially on a so well visited site like yours) a lot. PHP-CGI always has to start a secondary process to interpret the scripts wich often uses much more memory and system resources.

Sincerely,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I've tested PHP-FPM and Mod_PHP but somehow everything is much faster with PHP-FPM. That's why we've decided to use FPM.

Found also an answer about my picture problem.

:-)

Kind Regards,

Hi Kevin,

Zitat
I've tested PHP-FPM and Mod_PHP but somehow everything is much faster with PHP-FPM.

Oh okay, if this works better on your system you can leave it like that of course. :)
Even though it makes me wonder a little bit. On my benchmarks with the CF3 and CF4 the system had no big difference in performance between these two types of configuration with smaller or medium sized forums, but when the DB got larger and larger and you fired a bunch of parallel-loads on the page I mostly had better results with the module configuration and the php-cgi configuration used a lot more resources. But if you tested it already and cgi works better on your page ... sometimes little differences in a system configuration somewhere else break the rules of "laboratory-results" and benchmarks. lol :D

Zitat
Found also an answer about my picture problem.

Okay that makes sense! :D

Sincerely,
Chris
